What inspired you to become a n early childhood educator? “I have always loved working with kids, especially preschool ages! For me watching and learning how much children truly absorb & grow at these young ages is why I'm so passionate about what I do! Teaching kids as well as guiding them through some of the fundamental learning stages that come both in the classroom and outside, is something that has always come natural to me. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a teacher! Understanding children is no easy task but I work each day to better understand and support their needs. Being in the classroom has always made the most sense to me!”
How do you create a nurturing and engaging environment for young learners as they take their first steps in education? “My number one priority is for my room to always be a safe and welcoming space for all my current and future students to come! I try to create a classroom environment that I would have loved being in as a kid. For example, I love putting a lot of art work or projects we do on display so my class can not only see their hard work on the walls, but they can also show their work off with pride! I also add lots of pictures of the kiddos to the wall. I do this so the kids can see themselves grow and change as the school year goes on!”
What role does play-based learning have in your classroom, and how do you balance it with introducing foundational academic skills? “Our room has lots of not only fun & engaging toys, but toys that help our minds grow! I believe like many others that children learn the most through play. Open play allows kids to explore their imaginations, open their minds, and take on certain rolls which can only be fulfilled through free play. Some of the best learning comes from having a simple conversation with a kid who is playing. I love to do tons of different activities that support both learning through play, as well as the foundational skills such as writing, letter recognition, number recognition and so on.”
What advice would you give to parents to help support their child’s learning as they prepare to enter primary school? “Having meaningful, real conversations with your children is one of the best and most effective ways to continue supporting their growing minds! “
